Siren’s Song

November 24

6:30 p.m.

Tyler breathed a sigh of relief once the tables were put back in their place, and the craft supplies were being stored in boxes. He’d just pushed two tables against the wall when the outside door opened and Papa, from Papa’s Pizza, and one of his sons, walked in.

When the ‘decorating’ party had been scheduled for his club, he’d been pleased when Papa had volunteered to supply the food. Someone else had brought the paper plates and napkins, leaving him only needing to make coffee, tea, and lemonade.

While Papa was setting up the pizza table, Tyler slipped into the back, where Dawson was refilling the three drink urns.

“What’s going on?” his manager called him out.

“Come again?” Tyler frowned.

“You’ve been down here for how many hours?” Dawson questioned.

“I don’t know,” Tyler shrugged, “three or four.”

“Yet you’ve said nothing to Rachel,” Dawson pointed out. “Did you guys have a fight?”

“No.”

“Then what’s going on?” Dawson huffed. “Explain it to me like I’m not very smart.”

Tyler chuckled. “You aren’t very smart, but I’ll see what I can do.”

Except once he was put on the spot, how to explain what he was going to do was a struggle.

“Do you remember my bet with Rupert?” he began.

“Sure,” Dawson snickered. “You said, ‘it’s no big deal’ and if you lose, ‘it’s just one song.’ Have you changed your mind?”

“It is just one song … for now,” Tyler murmured.

“And I’m assuming you’re serenading Rachel?” Dawson went on.

“Who else would I serenade?” Tyler grumbled.

“Then why wait so long?” Dawson frowned. “Why haven’t you done it some night when you two were singing?”

“I want to show Rachel that she’s not like the rest of the women I’ve sung to,” Tyler admitted quietly. “If I would have done it at one of those other times, she might have thought it was just something that I was crossing off my list. This way, I hope she feels special.”

Dawson stared at him for a few minutes. Then his lips started to curve, and his eyes began to twinkle.

“Wow, Ty! I’m impressed,” he muttered. “I approve.”

“As for not saying anything to her,” Tyler sighed. “I was afraid I would lose my nerve. Or she would figure out something was going on and push me to tell her.”

“Good luck,” Dawson replied. “Do you need anything from me? Music perhaps?”

Tyler laughed. “It would probably be easier with you popping in a soundtrack. However—“

“—Rupert volunteered, didn’t he?”

“He did,” Tyler nodded. “Let’s hope he doesn’t sabotage me.”

“You should be fine,” Dawson assured him. “I’ll take care of the curtain and maybe add a little ambiance.”

Once his manager was gone, the butterflies in Tyler’s stomach took flight. He rarely got nervous when he performed, as he’d learned there was nothing to stress over. If he messed up — like he had when he’d lost the bet — very few noticed. However, this time it felt more important than at any other.

Tyler took a deep breath and pushed into the club, then immediately went backstage and slipped into the powder room.
